In an interview with Variety, Crawford addressed the scene, and the difficulties it posed logistically. After noting that, scientifically, The Deep having sex with an octopus can't happen scientifically. He then revealed, "that rig was the most cumbersome and annoying. I didn’t realize how heavy it was going to be. It was like a necklace. "Herogasm" was one of the most-anticipated episodes of The Boys Season 3 and of the series on the whole. Based on the six-issue limited series of the same name by Garth Ennis, John McCrea and Keith Burns, "Herogasm" saw the majority of the show's most important characters at the titular event, which is essentially a giant superhero orgy. In the TV series, Hughie Campbell and Billy Butcher team up with Soldier Boy to help him get revenge on his former Payback teammates, who sold him out to the Russians, resulting in years of imprisonment and medical experimentation.

Based on the comic book series of the same name by Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys was created for TV by Eric Kripke, who is also known for his work on such shows as Supernatural. The series follows the titular team as they work to takedown Vought International, the unethical corporation that profits from superheroes. This forces them to contend with The Seven, a Justice League parody group of super-powered people led by Homelander. The Deep is a member of The Seven.
