Not even touching moments are safe from the irreverent sense of humor that the cast of The Boys shares, as shown in a behind-the-scenes blooper reel from Season 2, Episode 6, "The Bloody Doors Off."Posted to the official Twitter account for the show, the two and a half minute clip features outtakes from a bonding scene between Billy Butcher, played by Karl Urban, and Erin Moriarty's Annie/Starlight, while Jack Quaid's Hughie Campbell Jr. rests in a hospital bed after sustaining injuries during the Sage Grove Center incident earlier in the episode. As Urban and Moriarty attempt to deliver their lines over a supposedly unconscious Hughie, Quaid can't stop breaking character, smiling and laughing several times. Whether it's Urban's delivery, Moriarty's reactions, Quaid's personal phone going off during a take -- playing "Why Can't We Be Friends," of all songs -- or just the fact that he's not allowed to laugh, the actor simply cannot keep it together.
The scene is supposed to feature a poignant moment between Butcher and Starlight. Each character is close to Hughie in their own ways, but they've yet to really click with each other. Seeing their mutual friend lying in a hospital bed causes the two to wax nostalgic about the simple and silly things they love about him, like the baby shampoo he uses or his Axe body spray addiction. Naturally, this causes Butcher to overshare and tell Starlight about some of the less flattering things he's supposedly seen, such as how he "slathers his bum with creamy Desitin."
Those moments seem to be too much for Quaid, who either cracks a smile or busts out laughing multiple times in the clip. Urban largely remains in character while first Moriarty and then the whole crew get caught up in the laughter. By the end, Quaid is apologizing to everyone and the director is heard off-camera suggesting they "skip through this one." The tweet's caption, that Quaid, "takes his job WAY too seriously" sums up the clip nicely.
The first two seasons of The Boys are currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The third season has wrapped and is reportedly set for release in mid-2022.
