Antony Starr, who plays the villainous Homelander on The Boys, revealed he was not initially a fan of the infamous Termite scene in the series' third season premiere.

Starr told CinePOP he initially felt the show's writers had "gone too far" upon reading the scene for the first time. "Like, there's the scene with Termite and the internal explosion. I read that and I was like, [mock laughter] 'giggle giggle.' And I was sort of unimpressed, to be honest," Starr said. "[But] when I saw it in real life in the show, it's one of my favorite scenes. It's just so bizarre, And it's all shot from [Termite's] perspective, so it just has this, it's like a Salvador Dalí painting, almost. It's just so surreal... There's nothing smutchy about it, [because] it's just weird. So, anyway, I love it!"

Victoria Neuman actor Claudia Doumit added on by saying, "But I think that's what [the writers] do well, is like, yeah, it's this extreme thing happening. But it's all wrapped up in, like, this justification and that's wrapped up in this brilliant storytelling," Doumit said before jokingly adding that it's "Ant-Man, but R-rated! It's the show that we're on."

The scene in question saw Termite shrink down small enough to crawl inside his partner's urethra to sexually pleasure him, only for him to accidentally return to his normal size too soon and explode his lover the inside. Following the Season 3 premiere of The Boys, many fans online theorized the scene was the show's take on the popular "Thanus" meme that spread online in the leadup to Avengers: Endgame. This meme described a similar scenario to what was depicted in the show, where Ant-Man could crawl up Thanos' anus and kill him from within.

Showrunner Eric Kripke confirmed in June the Termite scene was indeed inspired by the Ant-Man/Thanos theory. "These evolve in a writers' room and the evolution of that sequence started with, 'We need The Boys to fight a superhero,'" Kripke said. "So then we ask, 'What big superhero haven't we done yet?' Someone says, 'We haven't done Ant-Man.' And then someone else says, 'There's that meme of Ant-Man climbing up Thanos' butt and blowing him up. So we should do that. We should give the audience the thing that Marvel can't give to them.'"

Termite actor Brett Geddes has also shared a BTS photo showing that the crew for the show constructed a colossal prop for the actor to crawl into on set. "For those wondering…the dick is real," the actor wrote on his Instagram. Geddes also shared that his stunt double and him had to jump onto a giant "trampoline of coke" to film the sequence.

The first three seasons of The Boys are available to stream now on Amazon Prime Video.
