Amazon's adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's The Boys, and anti-superhero series that pits government agents with questionable morals against depraved superheroes, is set to premier in 2019, and Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's second Ennis adaptation after Preacher will adapt one of the comic's most popular storylines.

The Boys takes place in what's basically a depraved version of Superman's Metropolis. The world's superheroes, of which there are many, are a far cry from altruistic do-gooders like the Man of Steel. They're more like depraved rock stars who callously cause damage to the world they're supposed to protect. The Boys is a group of mercenaries hired to keep superheroes in check, though they have their own questionable tactics.

One of the series' primary romances involves Wee Hughie from the Boys and Annie January of The Seven, a group of heroes who also happen to be the comic's main antagonists. Both characters start out with naïve ideas about the world they inhabit, and then proceed to get their eyes opened in traumatic ways as the series progresses. January uses an alter-ego named Starlight to hide her identity, so when she meets Hughie on a park bench, neither have an inkling who the other works for, and their relationship ends up being one of genuine love and affection in a sea of misery, lies and debauchery.

We know very little about what to expect from the television adaptation of The Boys, especially considering how unadaptable Ennis' work can be and how loosely Rogen and Goldberg have been adapting Preacher. But speaking with CBR, Hughie actor Jack Quaid confirmed we'll see the Annie January/Hughie relationship on the show.

"Something happens to Huey at the start of the story and it kinda throws his life for a tailspin," the actor told CBR. "And then he meets Annie January kind of randomly on a park bench. And he starts to have a little bit of feelings for her but then he realizes that the two of them are from these completely separate worlds and it gets complicated to say the least. I don’t know I don’t want to give too much away, but their relationship and also the relationship I have with Butcher’s character, it’s been so awesome for me to do those scenes and play those relationships."

It's safe to say if and when the truth comes out, it won't be pretty. In the comics, Hughie winds up joining The Boys after his first girlfriend becomes a casualty of a superhero battle. The hero responsible for her death is a member of The Seven, Annie's new team. If the series does intend to adapt the comics this literally, Hughie and Annie's violently vexed love will probably wind up being the most cheerful storyline we see.

The Boys is set to premier on Amazon in 2019 and stars Karl Urban as Billy Butcher, Jack Quaid as Hughie, Laz Alonso as Mother's Milk, Karen Fukuhara as the Female, Erin Moriarty as Annie January, Chace Crawford as the Deep, Antony Starr as Homelander and Simon Pegg as Hughie's dad.
