The Boondocks are coming back, with HBO Max ordering two seasons of the revived animated series from original creator Aaron McGruder.

According to Deadline, each season will consist of 24 episodes, with the first new season dropping in fall 2020 with a 50-minute special. All 55 episodes of the original Boondocks will be available on the streaming service when it launches as well.

Based on the comic strip created by McGruder, the original Boondocks previously aired on Adult Swim. The reboot was confirmed back June, but no network or streaming service was attached at the time.

The new series will follow the self-proclaimed “Civil Rights Legend” Robert “Granddad” Freeman and his two grandsons, Huey and Riley, in suburban Maryland, where they find their neighborhood taken over by Uncle Ruckus and his neo-fascist regime. Now, the family must adapt to life under Ruckus.

"There’s a unique opportunity to revisit the world of The Boondocks and do it over again for today," McGruder said. "It’s crazy how different the times we live in are now – both politically and culturally – more than a decade past the original series and two decades past the original newspaper comic. There’s a lot to say and it should be fun."
