A television series is in the works based on the cult 1999 film "The Boondock Saints," with writer/director Troy Duffy at the helm.

Deadline reports that IM Global Television is producing the prequel series, with Duffy set to write and executive produce, and direct the first episode. Original stars Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flannery are in talks to serve as co-executive producers.

The TV project will trace the origins of brothers Connor and Murphy MacManus, who in the first film become vigilantes after killing two Russian mobsters in self-defense, and pledge to rid Boston of crime. A sequel, "The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day," was released in 2009.The search is under way for a showrunner.
