The Book of Boba Fett Season 1 earned a positive reception, but it had several ups and downs with many fans readily voicing their complaints about everything from how the show changed its title character to various plot holes created along the way. While the final episode did much to assuage viewer concerns, the season was uneven at best.
When Star Wars fans watch material, they already have ideas in their heads -- especially about individual characters. Viewers found their hopes completely trashed by The Last Jedi because the writers either didn’t understand Luke Skywalker’s character or chose to subvert expectations. The film created controversy because it mishandled fans' nostalgia. The Book of Boba Fett had the exact same problem and so Disney would be better off leaving it alone.
Sorry, Heroic Boba Fett Just Didn’t Work
Fans were initially excited for a series starring Boba Fett, but that quickly turned into chagrin over the first few episodes. The Star Wars powers that be took Boba’s character in a direction that completely contradicted fan expectations. The Boba Fett from the original trilogy was a man surrounded by mystery. All people knew was that he was a bounty hunter who didn’t give a damn about anyone or anything. He was the guy who never took his helmet off, spoke with his blaster and was respected by Darth Vader. That was the character fans wanted.
Instead, The Book of Boba Fett put the former (emphasis on former) bounty hunter in a bad place. Then after years of life with the Tusken Raiders, he was the same lowly person with no character development -- except for he suddenly cared about others. Boba spent the entirety of his series trying to become a heroic daimyo. Star Wars was trying to manufacture its protagonist into a hero, but it just didn’t work. Boba was a villain and should have remained that way.
The Finale Didn't Win Over Viewers
The Book of Boba Fett finale was the definition of “okay.” It did everything that it was supposed to do, but it was horribly predictable and shoehorned in way too much plot armor. On top of that, it just wasn’t exciting, which the viewer response proved it by coming in at a 7.8 in IMDb's user ratings. While it was Boba Fett’s series, the episodes that focused on Din Djarin and Grogu got a much better reception from viewers, and the finale did nothing to change that fact.
That reaction indicates there's not much demand for The Book of Boba Fett Season 2, and more interest in The Mandalorian Season 3. This shouldn’t be the end of Boba’s story, but it should be the end of his series. Boba’s new character arc simply wasn’t what fans wanted, so it’s time to pull the plug and move on.
