WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett "Chapter 1: Stranger in a Strange Land," streaming now on Disney+.

While Boba Fett's armor is an iconic part of his character, he is not the only one who has used the armor in the Star Wars franchise. Most significantly Star Wars: The Mandalorian "Chapter 9: The Marshal," Cobb Vanth used Boba's armor to help him protect Mos Pelgo from the Mining Collective and later the Krayt Dragon. Cobb explains that he received the armor from Jawas, but how the Jawas came to possess the armor has been a mystery. Well, Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett "Chapter 1: Stranger in a Strange Land" reveals that the Jawas attacked Boba Fett and stole his armor soon after his escape from the Sarlacc Pit. And while this moment might seem like a minor incident, this scene might also be a subtle callback to Boba's original escape from the Sarlacc Pit in Star Wars: Legends canon.

Boba escaped from the Pit of Carkoon multiple times in Star Wars: Legends canon, but the first escape is most relevant here. Boba also encountered the Jawas first after his escape in Star Wars #81 by Jo Duffy, Ron Frenz, Tom Palmer, Tom Mandrake, Jose Rosen, Glynis Wein, Louise Jones and Jim Shooter. In the issue, Jawas looting the wreckage of Jabba's sail barge find Boba, and one of their droids incorrectly identified Boba as a droid or a cyborg. How Boba escaped is unclear, but one of the Jawas' droids speculates that the Sarlacc Pit merely regurgitated him, a far less flashy escape.

The Jawas took Boba into their custody, and the disoriented bounty hunter went along with working for the Jawas because he had lost his memory. When Han Solo attempted to rescue R2-D2 from the same group of Jawas, he formed an uneasy alliance with Boba that was broken as soon as Boba remembered who he was. The issue ended with Boba being devoured by the Sarlacc once again, even though Han tried to save him. Overall, in many ways, Boba's first escape from the Sarlacc Pit was also his silliest escape, and his escapades with the Jawas were not his shining moment.

Now, in Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett, the Jawas also find Boba first, though the details have been changed considerably. To begin with, Boba now canonically freed himself from the belly of the Sarlacc, showing far more competence than his Legends comic counterpart. Still, the Jawas undercut that competence when they find him. The Jawas were made to appear more menacing in the episode, and, unlike in the comic book, they raided the wreckage of the sail barge under the cover of darkness. Also unlike their comic book counterparts, the Jawas of The Book of Boba Fett showed more intelligence, quickly assessing that Boba's armor could be worth something while still recognizing that the bounty hunter himself was not a droid. The Jawas quickly stole the armor, and, due to his injuries, Boba was unable to fight back.

The Jawas' treatment of Boba contrasts sharply with how they treated Cobb Vanth when they came across him in the desert later. The key difference between the two encounters is what they had to offer the Jawas in return for aid. Cobb had silicax crystals to offer the Jawas in exchange for their help, while Boba had nothing other than his armor to offer, which is why they left him for dead. Later, the Tusken Raiders take on the role of Boba's captors, but Boba fully has his wits and a desire to escape.

So, the Jawas in Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett might be a subtle reference to his original Sarlacc Pit escape. By including Boba's flashbacks to his escape from the Sarlacc Pit and his encounter with the Jawas, the show strikes a key balance between Boba's strengths and weaknesses, especially at his lowest point. And in the process, The Book of Boba Fett humanizes the former bounty hunter through his failures, giving far more weight to his triumphs in the episode and in the future as he attempts to keep his hold on Jabba's empire.

To see how Boba Fett's armor in action, new episodes of Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett air Wednesdays on Disney+.
