“The Best Man Holiday” steals Thor’s thunder on Friday

Although it’s unlikely “Thor: The Dark World” will be knocked out of the top spot at the box office this weekend, the film faced stiff competition on Friday from “The Best Man Holiday,” the sequel to 1999’s “The Best Man.” reports that “The Best Man Holiday” brought in an estimated $10.7 million on Friday at the North American box office, while the second “Thor” film brought in just shy of $10.5 million. Thor is still expected to take the weekend with a projected $37 million, compared to “Best Man’s” projected $31 million, but if “Best Man” hits that projection, it’ll have grossed almost double what it costs to make the film ($17 million).

So have Thor, Loki and the rest of the Asgardians lost their box office mojo? I say thee nay – the film could make $450 million in global ticket sales by Sunday, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which would lap its predecessor’s total gross of $449 million. Save the tears for next weekend, when “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” enters the field and the odds won’t be in Thor’s favor. The sequel to the 2012 film is expected to make $170 million domestically in its opening weekend.
