The Batman star Zoë Kravitz revealed that she was dissuaded from acting too much like a cat for her role as the Princess of Plunder, Catwoman.

"I mean, I think for Selena, I think a lot of her power comes from her vulnerability," Kravitz said at a press event attended by CBR. "I think I really wanted to ... this idea of what it is to be feminine, and what it is to be sexy, what it is to be strong. I didn't want to have to imitate masculine strength or power. I really wanted to allow her to be soft and feminine, and that be part of her power. A lot of it was, I mean, it's in the script."

Kravitz added that she "didn't have to do a lot of work in order to create a grounded character," and praised director and co-writer Matt Reeves for doing "such a wonderful job" at keeping the movie's cast grounded, going on to say, "Whenever we would kind of go off the rails a little bit and get too excited thinking I'm going to play with Catwoman, I'm going to do a cat thing, [Reeves'd] be like, 'Don't do that.' Don't do the Catwoman thing that you're doing. It was helpful, and it really keeps the tone of the film very, very clear."

Ironically, while she was told to avoid being too catlike, Kravitz revealed last year that she got ready to play Catwoman by studying lions, noting, "We watched cats and lions and how they fight and talked about what is actually possible when you're my size, and Batman's so much stronger than me. What is my skill? It's being fast and tricky." Kravitz also delved into why her upcoming portrayal of the Feline Fatale had more claw-like nails, as well as stating that she did not want her portrayal to be fetishized or stereotyped.

While The Batman has not yet arrived on the silver screen, Reeves revealed that he spoke to HBO Max about doing a Catwoman spinoff series. "What we're really trying to do is to launch this world," he said. "If the world embraces [The Batman], we have a lot of ideas for things we want to do, and for sure we want Selena to continue." It's known that the film will give rise to spinoffs for the Gotham City Police Department and the Penguin on the aforementioned HBO Max, and Reeves had also discussed his intention to make a "Batverse," saying the idea is that the story of Gotham City "never ends."

Directed and co-written by Matt Reeves, The Batman opens in theaters on March 4.
