The latest promotion for The Batman asks fans to decode the Riddler's clues.
In Matt Reeves' The Batman, Gotham City is plagued by a series of attacks perpetrated by the Riddler, a masked terrorist. The attacks draw the attention of Batman, who must solve the villain's riddles to find his true agenda. Eagle-eyed viewers noticed that the latest trailer for The Batman included a hidden code using the Riddler's secret language. This text, seen at the end of the trailer, deciphers to "You are el rata alada" and has multiple meanings. In English, it translates to "You are the winged rat," while reading the phrase aloud turns it into "URL: rataalada." Following this link leads to a website with bonus content from the world of The Batman.
Once visitors arrive on the website, they are asked a series of questions by the Riddler himself. The riddles are "What's black and blue and dead all over?" (Batman), "Those who make me are likely to break me" (The law) and "I can be easy or a dead end. Careful when you cross me" (A street). Upon correctly answering all three riddles, fans are given access to sketches of Robert Pattinson as Batman from the Gotham City Police Department archives. However, the site is programmed to tease fans who click away from the questions at any time. Furthermore, guests who refresh the website after completing the riddles will be asked if they have ever been to the Iceberg Lounge, the headquarters of Colin Farrell's Penguin. If they answer yes, fans can access an additional image with text that translates to "Stay Vigilant."
This clever marketing technique gives fans some unique insights into the mind of Paul Dano's Riddler. Marketing for The Batman has kept the villain in the shadows, only showing him in fleeting glimpses. The latest trailer for the film revealed that the Riddler's attacks are connected to the Wayne family while also suggesting that the villain has deciphered Batman's secret identity, making him a threat to the Dark Knight on multiple fronts.
In addition to Riddler and Penguin, The Batman will welcome Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, aka Selina Kyle. Batman's tense relationship with Catwoman seems to be one of the central plot threads of the film, with one scene featuring the two fighting and others suggesting the Bat and the Cat will form a romance during the film, offering Bruce an ally in his fight against evil.
The Batman hits theaters on March 4, 2022, and will be available to stream on HBO Max beginning April 19, 2022.
