The Batman solves a mystery surrounding the bat-shaped chest symbol on the Dark Knight's suit.

In a video that has since been made unavailable, star Robert Pattinson detailed the various, handmade gadgets crafted by his version of Bruce Wayne/Batman, including the bat symbol worn on the chest of his costume. While it was long speculated by fans that the symbol was forged from the gun that killed Bruce Wayne's parents, the video revealed that it is actually a tactical knife.

When Pattinson's batsuit was first revealed in 2020, fans took notice of the Bat-insignia across the chest, with some speculating that it was a reference to Detective Comics #1000 by writer Kevin Smith and artist Jim Lee. The comic saw Bruce Wayne melt down the gun used to murder his parents and forge it into his suit as an extra layer of protection.

The Batman director Matt Reeves previously explained that Pattinson will portray a gritty, practical take on the Caped Crusader, and a recent photo offered a hi-res look at the batsuit, which was detailed with battle scars and armor plating. Reeves has explained the "crude" appearance of the costume, saying that he wanted Batman's suit to look handmade in the film. In particular, he wanted its imperfections, such as the seams in the cowl, to be visible to audiences.

"He's on this obsessive mission," Reeves said. "He's a rich guy who's able to use the money to do this stuff, but he's doing it himself. So I wanted, at a practical level, for you to see the seams in everything that he's doing." Reeves also explained that the DIY nature of Pattinson's Batman extended from the creation of the suit to the construction of the Batmobile.

"In the suit, you can see the seaming in the cowl," he said. "You can see that he's doing this all himself. You can see that he's building this car in his garage. You can see the crudeness of it. There had to be a certain unfinished, not polished quality to it. Obviously, the car needs to perform, so I thought it should be like a muscle car. And the suit needed to protect him so that needed to make sure it looked almost tactical, and almost looked like riot gear."

The Batman has been described as a neo-noir crime thriller that will follow a younger Bruce Wayne who is only in his second year of vigilantism. Both Reeves and Pattinson have stated that the film will lean heavily into the character's detective abilities.

The Batman arrives in theaters on March 4, 2022
