The Batman Director Matt Reeves Has Ideas For a Trilogy

Director Matt Reeves concedes he has ideas for a larger Batman arc, but for the time being remains focused on a single film.

War for the Planet of of the Apes director Matt Reeves has big plans for his first foray into the DC Extended Universe, Ben Affleck's The Batman.

Asked whether he envisions the film as the beginning of a new trilogy, the director told Fandango, "I have ideas about an arc, but really, the important thing is just to start ... you have to start with one. You know, you have to start with a story that begins something."

"I would be lying if I could tell you that the arcs of Apes was already planned out," Reeves continued, "because it simply wasn't; it's one of those things where that character was so potent, and the possibility was embedded from the beginning, but exactly how you've got from A to Z is not something that existed."

Reeves explained that the original follow-up to Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a much different idea than what became Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. "[W]hen Mark [Bomback, the co-writer] and I began Dawn, we know what our goals were, but we didn't know how we were going to get there, and I would say that that more relates to the way that I see a Batman story, is a kind of ambition for a series of stories, but really the most important thing is gonna be to tell a vital story first."

War for the Planet of the Apes opens July 14. Targeted for release in 2019, The Batman stars Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon and Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke.
