A new synopsis for The Batman may imply that another villain could plague the Dark Knight in his newest cinematic outing.

According to the synopsis released by Warner Bros., two years of "stalking the streets as the Batman" has taken Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne "deep into the shadows of Gotham City." With his only trusted allies being his butler Alfred Pennyworth and Lt. James Gordon, Bruce has "established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens."

However, when a killer begins targeting Gotham's elite with "a series of sadistic machinations," Batman finds himself on "an investigation into the underworld," where he comes face to face with the likes of Catwoman, The Penguin, Carmine Falcone and The Riddler. However, as the evidence "begins to lead closer to home," the Caped Crusader must create new alliances, discover his enemy's true identity and "bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City."

While The Riddler's name appears in the synopsis, the mention of "a killer" may mean that this could be a completely different character from the Prince of Puzzlers, though who the second character might be is unknown as the synopsis provides no clues to their identity.

In regards to possible villains appearing in The Batman, it was seemingly confirmed by actor Barry Keoghan's brother Eric that the Eternals star would be playing The Joker in the movie. However, this does not mean Keoghan is officially playing the character, as it has not been confirmed by the actor or Warner Bros.

The full synopsis for The Batman can be found below:

Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies—Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright)—amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham's elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World's Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator's plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

Directed and co-written by Matt Reeves, The Batman is currently set to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
