Following the recent announcement that The Batman director Matt Reeves and Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter will helm a spinoff TV series for HBO Max, it is now being reported that the show is going to be set before Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne takes up the mantle of Batman.According to Variety reporter Justin Kroll, the series will explore the origins of The Batman's Gotham, offering insight into how it became such a corrupt and crime-ridden city metropolis. While the DC Extended Universe film will feature multiple villains from the Dark Knight's rogues gallery, including Riddler, Penguin, Carmine Falcone and Catwoman, as well as Jeffrey Wright's Commissioner James Gordon, it is unclear if any of those actors or characters will appear on the series.RELATED: The Batman's Kravitz on Why Robert Pattinson Is 'Perfect' for the Lead Role

The premise of the upcoming spinoff has drawn comparisons to the Gotham television series that ran for five seasons and Gotham Central, the police procedural comic-book published by DC Comics, which focused on the difficulties faced by police officers trying to do their job in present-day Gotham city.

The unnamed The Batman spinoff for HBO Max currently does not have an announced release date or cast.

Directed and co-written by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Jayme Lawson and Peter Sarsgaard. The film arrives in theaters on Oct. 1, 2021.
