The Batman isn't due out in theaters until next month, but the film's director has confirmed talks regarding a potential sequel to the upcoming film are already taking place.

While speaking at the film's red carpet premiere, The Batman director Matt Reeves revealed he is already in talks with Warner Bros. about making a sequel. "I really believe in what we’ve done and I’d be excited to tell more stories," Reeves told The Independent (via The Direct). "We have started talking about another movie, but, y’know, right now we’ll just put it out in the world and I’ll try to enjoy this."

Though excited to expand upon his version of the iconic vigilante outside the DC Extended Universe, Reeves made sure to emphasize the importance of The Batman's ability to stand alone. "I mean look, you don’t make number one as if there’s going to be number two," the director said. "You have to make number one as if you’re swinging for the fences and it has to be a movie that stands and lives on its own."

Reeves also discussed expanding his non-DCEU Batman to HBO Max shows, mentioning a series focusing on Colin Farrell's Penguin. "We are already telling other stories in the streaming space," Reeves continued, "we’re doing stuff on HBO Max, we’re doing a Penguin show with [Farrell] which is gonna be super cool, and we’re doing some work on some other stuff too."

As for what that "other stuff" might be, Reeves confirmed a prequel series focusing on the Gotham City Police Department was in the works back during DC FanDome 2020. A number of other spinoffs of The Batman are being considered as well, though Reeves noted in a separate interview that nothing is guaranteed yet, saying, "It will obviously have a lot to do with how people receive [The Batman]."

Star Robert Pattinson expressed his willingness to return as Batman "as many times as people want to see it," adding that he's even talked with Reeves about doing not one but two more sequels. "I've talked to [Reeves] about the idea of doing a trilogy and that would be wonderful," Pattinson said. "I really, really enjoyed the process and it's such a fun character to play. And yeah, that'd be lovely."

The Batman hits theaters March 4.
