Fans of The Batman are hotly debating whether the DC blockbuster's sequel should include Dick Grayson as Robin.Whether Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight needs a sidekick was the subject of a flurry of tweets from Bat-Family enthusiasts. Arguments in favor of adding Dick Grayson to The Batman 2 include how well it would tie in with several themes co-writer/director Matt Reeves introduced in the first movie. The pro-Robin camp also points to Batman: The Long Halloween sequel Dark Victory as an example of how the character could work in The Batman's more grounded universe.Related: Jensen Ackles Hasn't Seen The Batman Because of Twilight: 'It's a Sensitive Subject'

Fans who are against the inclusion of Robin in The Batman sequel argue that it's too early to introduce the character into the fledgling franchise. They also maintain that expanding the supporting cast to include Dick Grayson would make The Batman 2 too crowded, highlighting the infamous 1997 flop Batman & Robin as proof that the Boy Wonder rarely works in live-action.

Reeves himself has expressed uncertainty over whether Robin would fit within the "Batverse" he's created, although he hasn't ruled the idea out. By contrast, Pattinson is more openly enthusiastic about bringing Dick Grayson onboard for The Batman 2 on one condition. "[Robin] has to be 13," he said. "That's the only way I'll accept it... people are so scared of it, but it's kind of exciting. I think it would be a really fun addition." Pattinson also referenced the "Death in the Family" storyline centered around Grayson's successor Jason Todd, implying he's partial to teaming up with more than one incarnation of Robin.

Warner Bros. announced The Batman 2 in April 2022, which came as little surprise following the film's impressive $759.18 million worldwide box office haul. Little is known about the sequel at this stage but Pattinson is locked in to reprise the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman, with Reeves once again set to write and direct.

Fans are currently trying to tease out which of the Caped Crusader's villains will serve as The Batman 2's primary antagonist. The first film sets up the rise of iconic rogues like The Penguin and The Joker while also hinting that an appearance by lesser-known villain Hush could be on the horizon. Reeves remains tight-lipped regarding who the Dark Knight will go head-to-head with in the sequel.

The Batman is now streaming on HBO Max and is available for purchase on digital platforms. The film arrives on Blu-ray, 4K UHD and DVD May 24.
