Director Matt Reeves' The Batman has been in production since the beginning of the year, and as set photos continue to leak onto the internet, fans and paparazzi devour any morsel of information about the upcoming film.

Undoubtedly, the one thing everyone had their eyes peeled for was actor Robert Pattinson in the fabled Batsuit. Reeves, however, took control of the reveal into his own hands as he unveiled a short camera test featuring Pattinson as the Dark Knight.

While much talk has been around the new Bat symbol seemingly made from two halves of a pistol grip, there's another detail that's just as important and not nearly discussed: the cowl.

There are already a host of images swimming around the forums where fans have fiddled with the colors and contrast of The Batman's screen test. If you take a closer look at the desaturated pictures of the Caped Crusader's cowl, though, it appears that the mask is leather or leather-like, with stitching, as if it's handcrafted. Presumably, this stitch job would've been done by Bruce Wayne himself.

The stitching also means that Pattinson's Batman will be able to turn his head while wearing his cowl. Ben Affleck's Dark Knight didn't suffer from the stiff cowl issue, but Christian Bale and other actors who portrayed the hero often complained about the rigidity of the rubber mask and inability to move their heads. It often looked amusing as Batman struggled to face-off against multiple enemies without turning his whole body around.

Apart from the mobility, the fact it's likely handmade may also underscore when in the Caped Crusader's career the film takes place. According to a report from The Wrap, The Batman won't be an origin story, choosing to focus on Wayne's second year as the Dark Knight. However, this hasn't been confirmed by Warner Bros. or Reeves at this time.

That being said, this information does corroborate some of the rumors about when the film takes place. It's no secret that Reeves favored a younger Dark Knight than a seasoned veteran, or else Affleck would've likely returned to the role. The origin story has been done several times now, so the chances were always high that Reeves would've set his movie a little while after that. It's a good starting point since Reeves won't be saddled with the baggage of an origin but is still able to develop the hero.

If The Batman does take place in Year Two, the costume was probably made by Wayne -- or with a little help from Alfred Pennyworth. Remember, this is the time before Lucius Fox and all the gadgetry will be limited. At this point in his crimefighting life, Pattinson's Dark Knight will still be finding his feet at this stage and his suit will need to balance practicality with protection and function.

The other possibility is that it's one cowl (or Batsuit) of many. Throughout the years, Batman has shown that he has more outfits than a Victoria Secret model, so this could be the one chosen for the special occasion of punching Colin Farrell's Penguin or Paul Dano's Riddler. Unquestionably, it would be a pleasing moment for fans to see Pattinson's Dark Knight trade in his handcrafted cowl for a high-tech one, à la Arkham Knight, at the end of the film.

Of course, there will be more pictures and videos of The Batman's cowl in the months to come, so everyone needs to exercise some patience for now. Reeves and his design team took a bold approach here, but it certainly introduces some intrigue and looks the part.

Directed and co-written by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright, and John Turturro. The film arrives June 25, 2021.
