HBO Max is in early development on a spinoff series of The Batman starring the DC villain Penguin.

Variety reports Colin Farrell, who will portray The Penguin in director Matt Reeves' The Batman, has been approached to also star in the HBO Max spinoff series. However, a deal between Farrell and HBO Max has yet to be finalized. The untitled Penguin project would reportedly examine how the villain rose to prominence in the Gotham criminal underworld. Reeves and The Batman producer Dylan Clarke are reported to be executive producers on the Penguin spinoff, with Lauren LeFranc penning the script.

Actors to previously play Penguin include Burgess Meredith, Danny DeVito and Robin Lord Taylor. While it's known Colin Farrell is the Penguin in The Batman, fans have not seen much of his character in the footage released so far. Of course, there's only been one official trailer for the Warner Bros. film, which debuted during last year's DC FanDome. The second trailer for The Batman is expected to release in October for the second edition of the DC virtual event.

A Penguin series is the second spinoff of The Batman in development at HBO Max. Another series with Reeves attached focuses on the Gotham PD and reportedly focuses on a young James Gordon. Gotham PD reportedly has "Arkham" as its working title, which may hint at the show's connection to the infamous Arkham Asylum from the Batman franchise.

The Batman arrives in theaters March 4, 2022.
