HBO Max's The Batman spinoff series centered on Colin Farrell's Penguin is officially a go.

The network announced the show (working title The Penguin) is getting a straight-to-series order as a limited series. The Batman director Matt Reeves is attached to produce alongside Dylan Clark, who also helped produce the Dark Knight's most recent entry. Lauren LeFranc, who previously served as a writer and producer on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., is attached as showrunner and writer.

Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content at HBO Max, describes Farrell's Penguin as a unique version of the character that fans "have never seen before." According to Aubrey, the series will show Farrell "take his already exceptional performance in The Batman to the next level." The Penguin serves a supporting role in The Batman, but the film hints at big things in his future.

Quick to praise Farrell's performance, Reeves added, "Colin exploded off the screen as the Penguin in The Batman, and having the chance to thoroughly explore the inner life of that character on HBO Max is an absolute thrill." The ending of the film suggests a resurgence will occur among Gotham's criminal underworld as the Penguin "grabs violently for power," according to Reeves.

Farrell himself considers the Penguin series a natural progression from the film's plot. "The world that Matt Reeves created for The Batman is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot," Farrell said. Despite initially adopting a self-deprecating tone regarding his The Batman role, Farrell is ready to take the next step in the Penguin's journey. "I couldn't be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin," he said. "Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem."

The latest Batman iteration hit theaters on March 4 to critical acclaim and much fanfare, currently sitting at an 86% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes among critics and 89% approval among audiences. The Batman pulled in $134 million domestically in its first weekend, exceeding the projected $128.5 million. Several HBO Max spinoffs are in various stages of development, including a series that connects to Gotham's infamous Arkham Asylum and one centering on Zoë Kravitz' Catwoman. Reeves addressed The Batman's spinoffs before the film's release, saying their viability "will obviously have a lot to do with how people receive this film."
