HBO Max's The Batman spinoff series based on the Penguin may include another Golden Age Batman villain.

According to a rumor shared on 4chan, the upcoming Penguin series is looking to cast for a role described as an "actor who was driven mad when he heard he couldn't participate in a play due to his deformed face." While this rumor is unconfirmed, it is in line with information teased in March by Bill "Jett" Ramey from Batman on Film, which hinted at a future appearance from the original Clayface, who first appeared during the Golden Age of Batman comics.

Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Basil Karlo debuted in Detective Comics #40 in 1940 as an actor who was driven mad after he discovered that The Terror, a horror film he had starred in, was being remade. Karlo adopted the persona of "Clayface," the film's villain, and went on a killing spree targeting the cast and crew of the remake before he was caught by Batman and Robin.

HBO Max's Penguin spinoff series received a series order earlier in March and will see Colin Farrell reprise his The Batman role as Oswald Copplebot/the Penguin. The Batman director Matt Reeves will return as a producer with Dylan Clark and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. writer and producer Lauren LeFranc will serve as the limited series' showrunner and writer. "Colin exploded off the screen as the Penguin in The Batman, and having the chance to thoroughly explore the inner life of that character on HBO Max is an absolute thrill," Reeves said of the series.

Directed and co-written by Reeves, The Batman stars Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Lt. James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin. The Batman has been described by both Reeves and Pattinson as a neo-noir crime thriller. In particular, the film follows a younger Bruce Wayne who is only in his second year of vigilantism and will lean heavily into the character's detective abilities.

Premiering in early March, The Batman exceeded box office expectations in its opening weekend, bringing in a total of $134 million after projections estimated it would open to $128.5 million domestically. The film also earned $21.6 million in its preview screenings, a number that includes showings on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night. While a solid box office haul, The Batman did not break -- or set -- any records with these earnings in comparison to other DC films. Overall, The Batman has grossed $751.1 million at the worldwide box office, with $395.05 million of that total coming from domestic ticket sales.

The Batman is now on HBO Max and releases on Digital, 4K UHD and DVD May 24.
