The Batman's Penguin-centric HBO Max spinoff series starring Colin Farrell has been confirmed.

Following reports of a Penguin series surfacing in September, Variety confirmed that not only is the series in the works but that Farrell will reprise his role as Oswald Cobblepot after debuting in The Batman.

Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin debuted in 1941's Detective Comics #58 and is one of Batman's most prevalent rogues. The character has been featured in various other mediums, including animation (he was a staple of Batman: The Animated Series), video games (such as the Batman: Arkham series), television (he was a central figure in Gotham) and film (Danny DeVito brought him to life in 1992's Batman Returns).

In early 2020, it was confirmed that Farrell would be the latest actor to portray The Penguin, and the latest trailer for The Batman featured the character involved in a fiery car chase with the Caped Crusader himself.

"Obviously, COVID began to grip the world while we were shooting and I left London in March [2020] and we were still down for four or five months," Farrell said in July. "And then we went back and then obviously [Bruce Wayne actor] Robert [Pattinson] got sick and that was like, 'Fucking Batman has COVID?'... I'm only in it for five or six scenes [as Penguin], so I can't wait to see the film 'cause it won't be ruined by my presence. It's a freebie for me. I'll get a little uncomfortable for the fucking nine minutes I have and then the rest I cannot wait to see how [writer/director Matt Reeves] brought this world to life."
