New LEGO sets for Warner Bros. and DC Films'Â The Batman all but confirm the movie won't be rated R, as some have hoped.
Avid LEGO fans are more than familiar with the toy company's policy of not producing playsets based on R-rated properties. That said, the very existence of LEGO sets based on The Batman means the film is likely rated PG-13 (any lower would be shocking considering the beatdown Batman delivers to a thug in the first trailer).
PG-13 is the most common rating for modern superhero movies, so none of this should come as a surprise. Nevertheless, there were rumors and speculation that star Robert Pattinson and director Matt Reeves were pushing for an R rating at one point to help The Batman stand out as a more mature take on the Dark Knight's mythos.
The Batman takes place during the second year of Bruce Wayne's caped crusade against the criminals of Gotham City. Unlike more recent DC movies, this one takes place outside of the main DC Extended Universe, and some reports have suggested it takes place on Earth-2. In either case, The Batman will have no ties to the universe that was home to Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne.
"It’s a strange feeling, I had moments when I was shooting, when you just caught a glimpse of yourself in a reflection and you be like, 'Am I actually doing this, this is crazy,'" Pattinson recently explained when discussing suiting up as Batman for his first DC endeavor. "It’s a combination of the suit does a lot of the work for you, but then when you need to do some work you have to really fight it. But it’s a very special feeling to put it on though."
Joining Pattinson in The Batman are Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin and Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, among others. The film's long-awaited second trailer is scheduled to arrive on Oct. 16 at DC FanDome, a full 14 months after the first trailer premiered.
The Batman arrives in theaters March 4, 2022.
