Director Matt Reeves shared whether he would introduce Robin in a potential sequel to his gritty superhero film The Batman. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz asked Reeves whether a version of the loyal teenage sidekick would work in the grittier, crime-infested Gotham City seen in The Batman. "I don't know," Reeves replied. "Here's the thing, I have a lot of ideas about what I want to do. I'm not sure what the next story is. For me, whatever that story is going to be, it's going to take these characters, and specifically Batman's character, and put them in some kind of emotional jeopardy. So, with what you're talking about, there may be a really interesting story."RELATED: The Batman’s Take on DC’s Greatest Villain Is the Most Terrifying Yet

"There have to be emotional stakes so you get drawn into that character's story," Reeves continued. "I don't want that character to become a cipher- I don't want it to be like, okay, so we saw that it wasn't an origin tale but it was kind of [Batman's] origins, and now he's just perfect. No, you need to test the character again, again and again, and for me,  there might be something [in bringing in Robin]." The director concludes that the introduction of a sidekick may be the "deep dive" required for a potential sequel.

Taking place during his second year of fighting crime, The Batman follows the eponymous superhero (Robert Pattinson) and his quest to bring down the hammer of justice on a sadistic serial killer called the Riddler (Paul Dano). To do this, the Dark Knight follows a trail of mysterious clues and, in the process, learns some dark secrets about his family's past.

The Batman has received almost universal acclaim from critics and audiences alike since its theatrical debut. Reviewers are praising the cast's performances as well as the gorgeous cinematography, compelling story, expert direction and distinct visual style. Reeves had Pattinson in mind when writing the screenplay for The Batman due to the actor's performance in 2017's Good Time, despite it being unclear whether Pattinson would even want to join the film's cast.

Pattinson, being a huge fan of Batman himself, was keen to portray the superhero on the big screen, although his casting was met with some backlash, primarily due to his role as Edward Cullen in the Twilight film series. The actor has said that the reaction was not as vitriolic as he had expected, and his performance as the Caped Crusader has been commended by critics.

The Batman is currently playing in theaters.
