When news broke that an early cut of Matt Reeves' The Batman was nearly four hours long, many wondered what was left on the cutting room floor. In addition to an interrogation scene between Batman and the Joker, a Barbara Gordon reference was also axed from the final runtime.According to The Batman: The Official Script Book, Reeves' film originally included a scene at the Gotham City Police Department in which Jeffrey Wright's Jim Gordon speaks with his daughter Barbara over the phone. The deleted scene was highlighted by Batgirl Film News, who posted an image of the script pages on Twitter. Though the scene appears in an earlier draft of the script, it is unknown whether it was filmed.RELATED: James Gunn Confirms The Batman's Status in Relation to His DC Universe

This deleted scene at the GCPD is just the latest to come out of The Batman. Following the film's release in March, Matt Reeves shared a five-minute interrogation sequence between Barry Keoghan's Clown Prince of Crime and Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight that was excluded from the final cut. The film's Blu-ray special features also included a deleted scene between Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin and Zoë Kravitz's Selina Kyle/Catwoman at the 44 Below Club that expanded on the characters' relationship and Cobblepot's desire to take over Gotham City.

News of Batgirl's exclusion from The Batman may come as a double blow to fans of the character. In August, Warner Bros. Discovery famously nixed HBO Max's nearly-completed Batgirl standalone film after sinking upwards of $90 million into the project. Set in the DC Universe and unconnected from Reeves' Gotham City, Batgirl starred Leslie Grace in the title role as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Brendan Fraser as Ted Carson/Firefly and Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Following Batgirl's cancelation, several reports surfaced as to why Warner Bros. Discovery decided to shelve the film. Some suggested that the move was made due to the movie's poor quality, with one insider comparing it to "a very expensive CW pilot." Other reports suggested Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav thought releasing the film would damage the DC brand and decided that taking the tax write-off was the better option.

Among fan circles, there is still a desire for a Batgirl film. Batgirl Film News, the page that shared The Batman's deleted reference to Barbara Gordon on Twitter, contains a petition to release HBO Max's Batgirl. In addition, when DC Studios' co-CEO James Gunn asked fans on social media what characters they would like to see get their own movie, a popular response was Batgirl.
