WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for The Babysitter: Killer Queen, available now on Netflix
When the post-credits scene of 2017’s The Babysitter revealed that Bee survived being hit by a car, many expected her to be the antagonist in the eventual sequel. However, even though The Babysitter: Killer Queen brings back all the demons who died in the first film and Bee, they are not the main threat in the second installment -- surprisingly, it's actually Melanie, Cole’s childhood friend and love interest.
In The Babysitter, 12-year-old Melanie gave Cole refuge inside her house from Bee and the only surviving member of her cult, Allison. She also called the police to help him, which eventually led to them kissing. It's a fact that as kids age their personalities change, but Melanie went through a 360-degree twist in the sequel that posed life-threatening consequences for Cole.
Set two years after the events of the first film, The Babysitter: Killer Queen follows Cole, who is now a high-school-aged teenager still bullied and lacking confidence. Since Bee had removed every trace of Cole ever killing her blood cult, everyone around him thinks that he is crazy for sticking to his story of surviving a Satanic ritual. Even his parents think that he has mental issues, which further depresses him and ends up alienating him from the only friend he ever had -- Melanie.
When the movie kicks off, Cole still has a crush on Melaine, so when she invites him to join her, her boyfriend Jimmy and their other friends, Diego and Boom-Boom, at a lake party, he agrees. However, things get suspicious rather quickly when Diego starts grilling him about the demon cult and surviving the blood ritual. Melanie then comes to her best friend's aid, ordering everyone to stop questioning him about the cult and the “Devil’s Book.”
Cole quickly realizes that he never told Melanie about the book just in time for her to turn around and slit Boom-Boom's throat. Sacrificing Boom-Boom gets her the Blood of the Sacrificed, which leaves "innocent blood" as the last thing she needs, something she plans to take from Cole. It's then revealed that because Melanie wanted to be an influencer with a billion followers and lusted for instant stardom, she was visited by Bee who offered her the deal of selling her soul to the Devil and completing the blood ritual to fulfill her dreams. The kindness and compassion she had as a child has been suppressed by her father's inability to be a caring parent. In absence of a nurturing figure in her life, the allure of social media turned her into a selfish, fame-hungry person ready to go to any lengths for her ambitions.
Once again, Cole is left fighting for his life against someone he trusted. Fortunately, he soon gets help from the mysterious new girl, Phoebe, who recently transferred to his school. While running from the demons, they bond over their similarities and find some semblance of reality in the craziness around them by getting intimate. At that point, since Cole is no longer an “innocent," his blood is tainted and impure. So, when the demons, including Melanie, drink his blood, they explode out of existence when the ritual backfires.
Directed, produced and co-written by McG, The Babysitter: Killer Queen stars Judah Lewis, Hana Mae Lee, Robbie Amell, Bella Thorne, Emily Alyn Lind, Andrew Bachelor, Leslie Bibb, Ken Marino and Jenna Ortega. The film is available to stream now on Netflix.
