WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Doctor Strange #5 by Mark Waid, Kev Walker, Java Tartaglia, and VC's Cory Petit, available now.

Although the Marvel Cinematic Universe has made one a far more famous figure than the other, Doctor Strange and Doctor Druid have a lot of history between the two of them. Doctor Druid predates Doctor Strange by a number of years, and even took leadership of the Avengers for a little while, despite always seeming to be a mystic second-fiddle to the usual Sorcerer Supreme.

Now, the two are working more closely together than ever with Strange working as a surgeon at a hospital that Druid administrates. But while they might be working together, Doctor Druid just confirmed that he hasn't quite exorcised all of his personal demons.

Doctor Strange Doctor Druid

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created Doctor Druid in 1961's Amazing Adventures #1 under the name Doctor Droom. A short time later, the character slipped into obscurity, and Lee and artist Steve Ditko collaborated on Doctor Strange's story in Strange Tales #110 is 1963. When Doctor Droom was ready to reappear, it was with a new name, to avoid confusion between him and the villain Doctor Doom. While Doctor Strange grew into a key character in the Marvel Universe, Doctor Druid struggled to find a place for himself, even after joining -- and then breifly leading -- the Avengers.

The two men share a similar origin: both are actual doctors who learned the mystic arts through training from the Ancient One, and both are characterized by an ego problem. The important difference between the two, however, is that Strange's journey has led him to grow as a man and to seek a life of service, while Druid has always maintained his selfish egotism, a flaw that even brought him into villainy for a short time.

Now, however, the two men are working together, though Doctor Druid's ego bristles at having to be Doctor Strange's minion. The two men are tracking down a lead into an underground auction of stolen magical artifacts. At the Quartersun Auction in Kryll City, you can get just about any magic bauble your heart desires, and that includes wands taken from Doctor Strange's troll friend, Vinlu. The wand thief killed Vinlu in the process of taking the items, so Doctor Strange is keen on investigating the auction.

But Doctor Strange would be noticed. His profile is too high. They need disguises to infiltrate the auction with disguises that mystic deception couldn't see through. The two men quickly turn to Mister Fantastic, who provides them with hologram costumes that make them look like demon monsters. Although Druid is supremely annoyed by using technology to disguise themselves, they slip into the auction and learn the business is being managed by Madame Masque, a long-time villain who is now trafficking in mystic artifacts.

Doctor Strange Madame Masque

When approached by Madame Masque, a disguised Druid makes small talk, where he makes a fatal mistake. Druid reveals his charade by calling the auctioneer by her supervillain name, which she's never used in Kryll City. By being overly confident in his ability to remain undercover, Doctor Druid has put the mission in jeopardy, showing that his own ego and confidence in his abilities have not diminished in the slightest.

Luckily for the universe, Doctor Strange is still at large, and on the scene, ready to continue the mission despite Doctor Druid's foul-up. For a character with such an important legacy in the Marvel Universe -- Doctor Druid is technically  Marvel's first Silver Age superhero -- this Avenger just can't get out of his own way. But perhaps, by being in such close proximity to Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme, this very old hero might pick up some good habits.
