“The Avengers” Surpasses $1 Billion Worldwide

Marvel’s “The Avengers” earned an estimated $103.2 million in its second weekend of domestic release, helping to push the superhero blockbuster past the $1 billion mark worldwide. According to the Los Angeles Times, that second-weekend haul smashes the $75.6 million record set in 2009 by “Avatar.”

The Joss Whedon-directed film brought in another $95.4 million in 54 foreign countries, raising its global box-office score to $628.9 million. Adding in the $373.2 million gross, that brings the worldwide take to more than $1 billion after just 19 days of release. The first Marvel Studios film to hit that milestone, “The Avengers” has already surpassed the combined lifetime totals of “Iron Man” and “Thor.”

Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed last week that a sequel is already in the works, to be released sometime following the already-announced “Iron Man 3,” “Captain America 2” and “Thor 2.”

It goes without saying that the “The Avengers” led the North American box office this weekend, with Tim Burton’s “Dark Shadows” coming in a distant second with just $28.8 million, falling short of Warner Bros.’ $35 million expectation.

“The Avengers” stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson, Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill and Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd as Dr. Selvig.
