The Avengers, Dark Knight Rises Pass Box-Office Milestones

Labor Day weekend say the horror film The Possession do better than expected and something called Ooglieloves bomb spectacularly, but the real story came with news that both The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises crossed major worldwide box office thresholds.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel's The Avengers, which returned to theaters Friday for a limited engagement, earned another $1.7 million domestically, which helped to bump its worldwide total past the $1.5 billion mark. It remains the third-highest grossing film of all time, behind Titanic ($2.2 billion) and Avatar ($2.8 billion).
