The Avengers, Brave, Sin City 2: March 14th Comic Reel

With the superhero epic nearly complete, Joss Whedon continues his media blitz, this time with Total Film Magazine. Courtesy of a detailed article summary at Comic Book Movie, Whedon speaks to his initial pitch for the film, why it's the definitive Hulk movie and subtle references to the comic book source material.

"This isn't the kind of movie where we're going to wink at the audience," Whedon told Total Film. "There's a great deal of humor and there are a couple of things where people will go, 'Oh!' if they're very into Marvel. Here and there I've thrown references, tiny things I remember [from the comics], but it's not one of those things where you look at and go, 'Oh, that guy and that guy! It's not 'Where's Waldo?'"

The director further clarified his goals for Earth's Mightiest Movie, saying he doesn't intend for "The Avengers" to merely be a first movie in a series.

"We DO give a nod to a greater problem than the one solved in this film," he said. "I'm a great believer in the idea that if you make the first one to be a 'first one,' then you have already failed. As much as we want to service the idea of a film in a franchise, I want this to be a satisfying film experience. I don't want people to go out saying, 'When's the next part?' I want people to say, 'Oh, I want to see that again!'"

He also definitively and completely debunked rumor of a Spider-Man cameo in the film saying, "There is no Spider-Man cameo in this movie!"

A Japanese ad for "The Avengers" has been floating around online and features a few new images of the cast.
