The Arrowverse's Batwoman/Supergirl crossover has officially been canceled.

In the Season 1 finale of Batwoman, "O, Mouse!," Kate Kane wanted Supergirl's permission to destroyer the kryptonite shard in her possession because it can damage the Bat-suit. However, although this set the stage for Batwoman and Supergirl to meet up, Batwoman showrunner and creator Caroline Dries told TVLine it can't happen, now that Supergirl is ending after Season 6.

"We're not really able to cross over because physically, we can't cross crews due to the fear of exposure to COVID," Dries explained. "So if Supergirl weren't ending this year, I would say there would be more of a possibility. But I'm afraid that at least this year, we're not going to be able to tap into that dynamic."

TVLine has also confirmed the planned Batwoman and Superman & Lois crossover won't happen this year either, due to similar health and safety concerns raised by the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The newest addition to the Arrowverse, Superman & Lois will pick up with Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) following the events of the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover.

Last year, Dries warned a crossover with Supergirl was unlikely to happen in Batwoman Season 2, saying the show's adjusted production schedule "doesn't really line up with ours." That was right before Batwoman star Ruby Rose exited the series after a single season, citing factors like the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Batwoman has since cast Javicia Leslie to play Ryan Wilder, a new character described as being "nothing like Kate Kane." The show's Season 2 premiere "What Happened to Kate Kane?" will pick up with Kate's friends and family as they try to make sense of her sudden disappearance and figure out if she's ever coming back. Meanwhile, Ryan will stumble upon Kate's Bat-suit and use it to fight crime in Gotham City.

According to Dries, Batwoman Season 2 will have a very different energy than Season 1, largely thanks to Leslie. "She hit the comedy beats, she hit the emotional scenes, she had swagger, she had vulnerability, she had fun," Dries said. "I wanted to infuse a lot of fun into this character, because I wanted to create somebody who's a little bit more aspirational."

Batwoman stars Javicia Leslie, Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Camrus Johnson, Dougray Scott and Nicole Kang. Season 2 premieres on Sunday, Jan. 17 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
