The Abandoned An’ Forsaked - Did Deadpool Create Venom?

In this feature we examine comic book stories and ideas that were not only abandoned, but also had the stories/plots specifically "overturned" by a later writer (as if they were a legal precedent). Click here for an archive of all the previous editions of The Abandoned An' Forsaked. Feel free to e-mail me at bcronin@comicbookresources.com if you have any suggestions for future editions of this feature.

Today, based on a bunch of suggestions, we take a look at whether Deadpool helped create Venom!

Okay, so the symbiote first showed up in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #8....

Obviously, we all know that Spider-Man rejected the symbiote and it then bonded with Eddie Brock, becoming the villain known as Venom.

It was not until 1995 and the Venom Super Special #1 (by David Michelinie, Kyle Hotz and Armando Gil) that we learned the origin of the symbiote...

Recently, Guardians of the Galaxy did some retcons on that origin, but we'll feature THAT retcon in a future column (as it is a more extensive retcon than this one).

In the current mini-series, Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars, writer Cullen Bunn tells new IN-CONINUITY (he specifically told CBR about the mini-series that, "[t]his is in-continuity."

In the third issue (art by Mateo Lolli and Ruth Redmond), Deadpool looks to repair his costume...

Note that Bunn does not EXPLICITLY say that the symbiote went crazy from Deadpool's thoughts, and honestly, if it weren't for so many people e-mailing me about this one, I'd probably skip it, but well, here ya go, folks! I'll revisit Venom's origins in the future when I deal with the more elaborate GotG retcon!

Thanks to the half dozen readers who wrote in with this suggestion! If anyone else has a suggestion for a notable comic book retcon, drop me a line at bcronin@comicbookresources.oom!
