WARNING: The following contains poilers for Ghost Rider #4 by Ed Brisson, Aaron Kuder, Juan Frigeri, Jason Keith, and VC's Joe Caramagna.

Danny Ketch debuted in 1990's Ghost Rider #1 and has maintained the Spirit of Vengeance up until 1998 when his series was concluded. Since then Ketch has appeared off and on, and most recently resurfaced in the pages of the current Ghost Rider ongoing series by Ed Brisson.

While it seemed that Ketch was destined to play second fiddle to Blaze, the most recent issue sees him become something else entirely. In place of the spirit of vengeance ripped away by Blaze, Ketch has been bestowed the title -- and powers of -- The Spirit of Corruption; Necrosis.

In Brisson's most recent issues of Ghost Rider all hell has broken loose, pun intended. After Mephisto was locked away by Doctor Strange, Johnny Blaze staged a violent take over of Hell. Now a whole lot of very angry demons have escaped into Earth and are wreaking havoc. Johnny is slowly being corrupted, and it seemed that the only person with the ability to check his power was Danny, until Johnny tore the spirit of vengeance from the 90's Ghost Rider and dropped him unceremoniously from the Brooklyn Bridge. While sinking into the river, Danny had a vision of a being called Necrosis, the spirit of Limbo.

With the help of the Caretaker, Danny Ketch travels into Limbo, a sickly green dimension that looks like a cross between a Hieronymous Bosch painting and a planet from No Man's Sky. Here Danny seeks out the domain's ruler, Belasco, to ask for assistance in bringing order back to Hell. This doesn't go over very well, which makes sense considering the last time we saw an interaction between the denizens of Limbo and the denizens of Hell it was Necrosis easily dispatching a Ghost Rider. Belasco says that the power and assistance of Necrosis can be gained if Ketch defeats Necrosis in combat. A powerless Ketch is no match for a six-armed centaur who wields a greatsword as big as he is but, just when Ketch is about to have his head smashed in, Necrosis collapses to the ground. Necrosis is reduced to an empty suit of armor and a spreading pool of black liquid, felled by the ruler of Limbo himself. Belasco dips his hand into the liquid christens Ketch with it, who staggers and screams as he transforms into the new Necrosis, The Spirit of Corruption.

This upgrade does not, however, come without quite a few strings attached. It is not out of the goodness of his heart (if there is any) that Belasco bestows Danny with this new power, nor his intention is to use Danny to infiltrate Hell. In many ways, this is a far more interesting development than simply having the centaur version of Necrosis act as the strong arm of a third party.

The question that still stands, however, is why? While Johnny's goal of getting Mephisto out of the way so that he may have full control of Hell is rather cut and dry, the intentions of Belasco remain a mystery. What about this power is going to make Danny beholden to Belasco? Why can't he simply use his new abilities, abilities which seem to be incredibly well suited to taking out Ghost Riders to take down Johnny and ignore Belasco completely? All we know now is that Belasco is looking for a "home field advantage" which suggests he is planning on using Danny's knowledge of Hell to seize power for himself.

The details of how this is all going to go down are anybody's guess but with Johnny in his King of Hell form, and Danny as the Spirit of Corruption, there is sure to be one hell of a clash coming up in Brisson's Ghost Rider.
