The 12 Days of Fred Van Lente Day – Ivar, Timewalker #8

This year, I decided to do something different for Fred Van Lente Day, I’m going to review one issue of Ivar, Timewalker a day, leading up to Fred Van Lente Day!

We continue with Ivar, Timewalker #8, by Fred Van Lente, Francis Portela, Karl Kesel and Andrew Dalhouse…

We reach the conclusion of “Breaking History” as the evil future version of the female lead of Ivar, the brilliant time travel scientist, Neela, is about to destroy all of time and all the multiverses by having them collapse upon each other.

This is by far the most action-packed issue of the story, as Ivar and his brothers, Gilad (Eternal Warrior) and Aram (Armstrong) are, in effect, storming the castle – only the castle is a space station next to a black hole in the distant future (and they have Amelia Earhart along for the ride). Portela, Kesel and Dalhouse really cut loose on the art in this issue, with some epic double-page spreads to start the book off…

What I liked best about this issue was that the book has finally gotten to the point where Ivar no longer has to lie to Neela about her work (he has been trying to talk her out of attempting to find a way to change the past because he knew it could be very dangerous – so he lied to her and told her she literally COULDN’T do it, which she obviously eventually realized she COULD do) and thus their relationship has finally been given a chance to move forward.

Of course, like many great dramas, things can’t go quite as simple as all that, so we get a tremendous confrontation between Ivar and evil future Neela, who is still, you know, basically NEELA, so Ivar has a complicated relationship with her.

The ending of this issue really packs a wallop, as Ivar makes a tough decision that he feels is the best for everybody. His brothers show their love for him, even though they hate him sometimes (a lot of times) by going along with his plan, even if they know that the conclusion of the plan might result in their brother’s death. They are willing to honor his wishes and the sacrifices he is willing to make for the woman he loves.

It’s going to be fascinating to see where the book goes now after this status quo-altering arc.
