WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for "The Blood of Sanctum," the Season 6 finale of The 100.
The penultimate season of The 100 provided a bold, new direction for the post-apocalyptic drama as the last remnants of humanity traveled to the distant planet Sanctum in hopes of rebuilding civilization. What they encountered on the strange, alien moon was an environment filled with new dangers and inexplicable wonders. However, by the finale, several characters had seemingly disappear, leaving their fates unknown as The CW series prepares for its upcoming seventh and final season.
One of the biggest, most bizarre, phenomena the characters discover on Sanctum is something referred to by the locals as a temporal anomaly. An amorphous green cloud that traverses the moon's surface, the anomaly made its debut about halfway through the season as main characters Octavia Blake, Diyoza and the new character Gabriel made their way back to the latter's compound. Sanctum's odd phenomenon related to time had been seen before: Arcing lights called temporal flares drastically aged anything caught directly in their light, including Octavia's exposed arm.
Entering the anomaly, Octavia was healed from her exposure to the temporal flare but Diyoza saw a vision of her unborn daughter as a child. Mesmerized, Diyoza entered the anomaly, despite Gabriel's warnings and vanished without a trace. While the fight against the Primes ruling Sanctum consumed much of the latter half of Season 6, this dangling plot thread is revisited in the finale as the characters reflect on events since their arrival on Sanctum.
Gabriel notices that Octavia now has strange markings on her back that match those found on an artifact known as the Anomaly Stone. The artifact is inadvertently activated, causing the temporal anomaly to reappear and Diyoza's adult daughter, Hope, to emerge from it. Revealing that Diyoza is evidently still alive and in the custody of unknown forces, Hope stabs Octavia, which causes the longtime main character to suddenly vanish, horrifying her older brother Bellamy, with whom she finally reconciled after being violently estranged for the past couple of seasons.
While Diyoza and Octavia may be gone due to their connections to the anomaly, they are not the only characters unaccounted for by the end of Season 6. Madi Griffin had spent much of the season running the risk of being consumed by the multiple personalities implanted within her through a neural mesh known as The Flame. Among these was the Dark Commander, a malevolent personality that drove Madi on a murderous rampage across Sanctum in revenge for the apparent death of her adoptive mother Clarke. By the season's end, Clarke had appealed to Madi's humanity, and Raven purged the Dark Commander from the neural mesh only to discover that it had uploaded itself to parts unknown before its deletion.
Given how ambiguous the fates of Diyoza, Octavia and the Dark Commander are, all three characters will likely return in some capacity during The 100's final season. For Bellamy, the sudden disappearance of his sister will drive the character going into Season 7 as he attempts to discover her whereabouts. And with Hope seeking help for her mother, the two rescue attempts are virtually guaranteed to be interlinked. As for the Dark Commander, the evil program may serve as the principal antagonist in the final season and his plans for bloody resurgence may be tied to the Prime leader Russell after previously offering him an alliance before his defeat. Either way, The 100 has left itself plenty of avenues to explore as its prepares for one final season.
