WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for The 100 Season 6, Episode 9, "What You Take With You," which premiered this week on The CW.
Clarke Griffin, the longtime protagonist of The CW's post-apocalyptic drama The 100, has been in a precarious positions for a significant portion of Season 6. Upon arriving with her fellow survivors from Earth aboard Eligius IV to the distant planet Sanctum, Clarke met the Primes, the new world's ruling class, who are revered as gods. However, Clarke quickly learned their secret to immortality was transferring their minds into new host bodies, resulting in her own possession by the spirit of a Prime named Josephine.
Due to Clarke's experiences on Earth, including being implanted with a memory chip, her consciousness survived, and she has spent the past several episodes battling Josephine to regain control of her body. The latest episode reveals the strain of a body supporting two psyches has begun to break down the mental walls between Clarke and Josephine, running the risk of the host dying, effectively eliminating both consciousnesses.
Picking up from the previous episode, Bellamy Blake continues to forcibly escort the Josephine-possessed Clarke through the wilderness of Sanctum to seek the help of the Children of Gabriel in purging Josie from Clarke's body. Most of Bellamy's journey throughout Season 6 has been to show how far the character would go to save and protect his friends, with Clarke in particular, and the episode shows him leading the uncooperative Josephine through hostile territory toward that goal.
The two are intercepted by the Children of Gabriel, which imprison them, and decide to execute Josephine when they realize she's a Prime, as evidenced by her blackened blood. As the faction prepares to behead Josephine, severing the spinal column and eliminating her consciousness, Josephine relinquishes control of Clarke's body to her, allowing Clarke to use her superior combat skills to kill her captors and free Bellamy. On the desperate hunt for Gabriel himself, Clarke remains in control, but can now see and hear a vision of Josephine in the real world, as the walls of her reality begin to break down from the shared strain.
To Josephine's surprise, Clarke had begun to learn skills from their shared time together in the same body, demonstrating that she could now ride motorcycles and operate the radios the Children of Gabriel and Primes had been using on Sanctum. After dispatching a Prime search party and taking some of their gear, Clarke and Bellamy set out while their calls for help are overheard on the radio by Gabriel and Octavia, setting up an uneasy reunion between Bellamy and his estranged sister.
After spending approximately half the season with her body possessed by Josephine, Clarke Griffin has finally regained control while Josephine's consciousness lingers, waiting for her chance to reassert dominance, and taunting Clarke in the real world as the lines between the two continue to blur. Fortunately, Clarke has begun to gain access to Josephine's memories and abilities and already is using them to her advantage but, with only hours remaining until her body dies from the strain, she will have to act quickly and avoid Josephine's influence if she hopes to survive.
The 100 airs on The CW Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The series stars Eliza Taylor, Paige Turco, Marie Avgeropoulos, Bob Morley, Henry Ian Cusick, Lindsey Morgan, Richard Harmon and Tasya Teles.
