Some call them ripoffs, and some call them homages. However, when it comes to the iconic original comic book superheroes, they often find several versions of themselves created over the years. Superman led to Captain Marvel, and then characters like Guardian and even Sentry. Are the X-Men ripoffs of Doom Patrol and who came first -- Man-Thing or Swamp Thing?

When it comes to Batman, things are even more difficult to look at when it comes to ripoffs or copycat characters. Many people see Moon Knight as Marvel's version of the Caped Crusader, but others see Daredevil filling that role. There are even others, like Nemesis, that is clearly a ripoff of the Dark Knight. Here is a look at the 10 most successful Batman ripoffs.

10 NIGHT-OWL

Night-Owl is a clear homage to Batman. The character appeared in Watchmen, which had several characters based on classics. However, Night-Owl was never anywhere near as great as Batman was, even in his prime.

Yes, Night-Owl was wealthy and had his gadgets. He even had a flying craft that called to memory Batman's best toys. However, he was washed up by the time the story started, and it's hard ever to see Batman that beat down. Besides, honestly, Roarsharch is the character that shares the most similarities to Batman in the story.

9 DARKWING DUCK

It can't all be serious, can it? One of the most popular cartoon characters from an entire generation's childhood is easily Darkwing Duck. Now, he is a duck and not a bat -- or a human. But he is Darkwing, and that name says it all.

What made Darkwing Duck so great is that it never relied on just mimicking Batman in the series. Honestly, there is as much there from The Shadow as there is from Batman. That makes Darkwing Duck possibly the most successful superhero cartoon not based on an existing Marvel or DC property.

8 BIG DADDY

Big Daddy Kick ass Nick Cage

Big Daddy is Batman, but a very violent version of Batman. Appearing in Kick-Ass, Big Daddy is the father of Hit-Girl, and he wears a costume that looks almost just like that of the Caped Crusader.

However, he does one thing that Batman would never do. He takes his guns, and he has a lot of them, and he blows the bad guys straight to Hell. Nic Cage portrayed Big Daddy in the movie version of Kick-Ass, and Cage was perfect. It makes you wonder what he would be like in a live-action Marvel or DC Comics movie.

7 MIDNIGHTER

Warren Ellis created his versions of Batman and Superman in his pages of Stormwatch. Apollo was clearly Superman while The Midnighter was Batman, and under the creative mind of Ellis, he took them in directions that DC Comics would never dare tread.

This direction included a romantic relationship that resulted in marriage and adopting a young superhero. When the two made their way to DC Comics, the New 52 reintroduced them with the marriage nullified. That changed with DC Rebirth, and despite Midnighter's violent nature, they made it work. What has to be the strangest moment, though, was when Midnigher began working with Dick Grayson.

6 NIGHTHAWK

Nighthawk was possibly the closest Marvel ever came to ripping off Batman completely. His origins came in the '70s as part of Squadron Supreme, which was full of characters that payed homage to the mainline DC Comics heroes. Later, Kyle Richmond went on to be a member of The Defenders -- a rich man playing a superhero.

However, when Marvel brought a second version in 2003, Marvel went a little overboard in creating its own Batman. Kyle's parents were killed in a hate crime when he was a child, and he trained his body to perfect physical perfection to seek vengeance as an adult. The one big difference is that Nighthawk went after white supremacists.

5 NEMESIS

Mark Millar created Nemesis for one reason. He wanted to create a Batman that grew up and did everything differently than the DC Comics version. What if he used his wealth to become a cold-blooded supervillain instead of a hero?

Millar asked, what if Batman turned into The Joker. This comic was a violent revenge story and took someone with Batman's skill set and turned him against the police and the city. His only goal was to torture and torment anyone and everyone. It isn't great, but it was very successful.

4 GREEN HORNET

Green Hornet is not only considered rip off of Batman, but he is a character that crossed paths with Batman. Here is the problem. Bob Kane and Bill Finger created Batman in 1939. George W. Trendle and Fran Striker created Green Hornet in 1936 -- three years before Batman ever showed up.

Green Hornet is Britt Reid, the wealthy newspaper publisher by day who puts on a mask and cape and fights crime at night. He even has a sidekick in Kato, who is the superior fighter. Green Hornet eventually met Batman on the '60s live-action television series.

3 MOON KNIGHT

Moon Knight: 10 Facts You Need To Know About Marvel's Batman

Too many people call Moon Knight Marvel's version of Batman. There are some similarities, but Moon Knight is a much more complex character than Batman. Yes, both men are wealthy and use their money to front their crime-fighting adventures, but Batman is just a man fighting for good.

Moon Knight has a split-personality and struggles to maintain his sanity. He gained the power of super-strength, durability, and stamina from the Moon God Khonshu. He doesn't mind killing, and most superheroes consider him to be completely insane. Sure, some fans compare him to Batman but only on the surface.

2 GREEN ARROW

DC Comics have their own alternate version of Batman. He even works with Batman on occasion, and both men are members of the Justice League. Green Arrow is Oliver Quinn, a man using his wealth to fight crime, protecting his city from those wishing to destroy it.

Yeah, he is Batman. In the comics, he is also a super liberal version of Batman who cares little about his wealth and is more of a Robin Hood, taking from the rich and giving to the poo. Green Arrow is one of the most successful Batman rip-offs, though, thanks to his portrayal on The CW series Arrow.

1 DAREDEVIL

The most successful Batman rip-off of all-time is Marvel's Daredevil. Batman is the Dark Knight, taking the appearance of a bat to frighten and scare the criminals of Gotham City. Daredevil took a name that is meant to scare criminals, dressed up like a red devil and set out to protect the people of Hell's Kitchen from anyone who tries to hurt them.

There are big differences. Batman is wealthy and has no ties with his alter-ego other than when it is needed. Daredevil is a lawyer in his real life and takes that as seriously when helping people as he takes his crime-fighting skills. But, at the end of the day, Daredevil is a Batman rip-off and one of the best superheroes in history.
