In manga and anime, the isekai genre is still going strong all over the world. The term "isekai" generally refers to stories in which a milquetoast protagonist falls into the world of a high fantasy realm or video game and builds a new, exciting life for themselves. The most popular tales in the genre have offshoots in anime, manga, video games, light novels and more. And with more isekai debuting every season and rocketing to popularity, it seems people just cannot get enough.

In fact, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slimea true standout among the current wave of isekai anime, recently announced a Season 2. Here's everything we know so far about what the second season will entail.

That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime: The Story So Far

That Time I Was Reincarnated As A Slime main characters

The protagonist of Slime, Satoru Mikami, is a 30-something salaryman who wakes up in a fantasy world after dying from a stab wound. This is par for the course, except Satoru doesn't wake up as himself -- he comes back as an honest-to-goodness, Dragon Quest-style slime. This might seem like a raw deal, but being a slime actually grants Satoru a unique ability: "Predator." This allows him to devour anything and copy its appearance and abilities.

Using this power, Satoru befriends a massively powerful dragon named Veladora, changes his name to "Rimuru Tempest" and sets out on a quest that sees him unite all sorts of different factions beneath him. He meets a Chosen One, founds a forest alliance, and even attracts the ire of a few Demon Lords. Not bad for a slime. The series is known for its well-rounded development of characters and refreshing take on a genre that's filled to bursting. Though it often plays into standard isekai tropesThat Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime has a strong, character-focused center that has made it popular the world over.

What To Expect In Season 2

The first season of the anime covered up to the middle of Volume 4 of writer Fuse and illustrator Mitz Vah's light novel series. By that estimate, Season 2 should cover through to at least Volume 8. 15 volumes have been published in Japan so far, which could mean even more seasons in the future. However, the first seven books have been translated into English by Yen Press if you just can't wait for the second season.

So far, not much is known about Slime Season 2. But, if the novels are any indication, we could be in for a dark turn. Volume 5 sees Demon Lord Milim declare war on a nearby kingdom -- one that's on the side of Rimuru and the Jura Forest Alliance. Unable to contact his friends, Rimuru resorts to something positively demonic in an attempt to settle things back home -- and that's just the beginning. The cover of Volume 5 sports a Rimuru that looks slightly older than before; an appearance change that usually comes with a huge power upgrade in anime. Considering Season 1 ended in the middle of Volume 4 of the light novels, Season 2 should pick right back up with no time skips.

When Does It Air?

No exact air date has been revealed for Slime Season 2, but it's set to premiere in October 2020.

New Slime OADs
