That Awesome Mortal Kombat Video Was Just A Pitch To WB

It turns out the Mortal Kombat: Rebirth video that sparked so much discussion yesterday isn't footage from a new movie or a trailer for a video game but rather, as one of our commenters suggested, a director's pitch to Warner Bros. for a new take on the franchise.

The official word comes from Star Trek: Voyager actress Jeri Ryan, who played Sonya Blade in the clip. "It's not a game trailer," she wrote on Twitter. "Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film. [...] I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was."

That friend, as we noted yesterday, is Kevin Tancharoen, who directed Fame, shockingly enough. The fight scenes were choreographed by Larnell Stovall, a stunt double and coordinator for projects ranging from Ultraviolet to the upcoming Green Lantern.

Maybe, just maybe, Warner Bros. executives will take notice and give the unlikely director a closer look (once the lawsuit over film rights is resolved, naturally). Hey, stranger things have happened.
