That '70s Show co-creator Terry Turner described the emotional experience of working on Netflix's That '90s Show.

"There was a point where some of the original cast, some of the new kids, and some of the original crew were sitting around the kitchen and I literally burst into tears," Turner said in an interview with Netflix Queue. Co-creator Bonnie Turner echoed his statements, saying that when Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp "came out in the first episode" as their original characters, Kitty and Red Forman, "I just died." She said, "I went, 'Oh I’m so happy I’m back. I’m so happy to see you both. Welcome home.'"

The making of That '90s Show turned out to be an emotional experience for the returning cast of That '70s Show as well. In June, actor Laura Prepon described her emotional, nostalgic return as Donna Pinciotti for the sequel series. "It's all the same sets," she said. "When I first went there, I cried. I'm just like, 'The nostalgia is so strong and it was such an incredible time in my life.' I can't wait for people to see it. I think they're really, really gonna get a kick out of it."

Prepare For Plenty of Nostalgia With That '90s Show

That '70s Show aired in 1998 and ran for eight seasons on Fox, chronicling the misadventures of a group of teenagers in the '70s in Point Place, WI. Along with Prepon, the ensemble cast included Topher Grace as Eric Forman, Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart, Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso, Wilder Valderrama as Fez and Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde. Five of the six prominent cast members from the original sitcom will return for the sequel series for various guest appearances.

It was announced that Netflix's That '90s Show had received a series order in October 2021 from the original creators of That '70s Show, Bonnie and Terry Turner. Netflix ordered 10 episodes of the '90s-themed spinoff series, with Gregg Mettler serving as showrunner. Smith and Rupp were among the first cast members announced as returning to the spinoff and will also serve as executive producers on the series. Tommy Chong will reprise his That '70s Show role as Leo as well.

While That '90s Show will feature many familiar faces, the spinoff will also see a new ensemble cast for a new generation of teenagers. Callie Haverda stars as Leia Forman, the daughter of Eric and Donna, who will be spending the summer in Point Place, Wisconsin with her grandparents, Kitty and Red. The cast of newcomers also includes Ashley Aufderheide as riot grrl Gwen; Mace Coronel as Jay; Maxwell Acee Donovan as Jay's best friend and Gwen's older brother, Nate; Reyn Doi as Ozzie; and Sam Morelos as Nikki. Netflix recently released the first official trailer for the sequel series, which also featured most of the original main cast of That '70s Show.

That '90s Show premieres on Netflix on Jan. 19.
