WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Eternals #7, available now from Marvel.

Thanos has proven to be one of Marvel's most enduring threats, a vicious killer with the galactic ambition for mayhem and slaughter and an often-unmentioned relation to the Eternals. After an ill-fated attempt to use Thanos for an ostensibly noble purpose ended up backfiring on the Eternals, the Mad Titan, the son of two exiled Eternals, has used the opportunity to gain a very potent power for himself.

In Eternals #7 by Kieron Gillen, Esad Ribic and Matthew Wilson, Thanos earns himself the leadership title of Eternal Prime, which gives him the ability to call upon the Uni-Mind and pushes him towards regaining a completely restored body.

Thanos' connection to the Eternals has become more prominent as of late, with the plans of the Earthly-bound Eternals and their recent discoveries giving Thanos the opportunity to be resurrected -- albeit in a crude makeshift body that could be eradicated at any time. After discovering the truth that their resurrections come at the cost of humans around the globe, the Eternals have had their faith shaken. One of the most horrified was Phastos, who revived the Mad Titan to assist in his plans to change their place in the world. After the ensuing battle, many of the Eternals have retreated to the Deviant city of Lemuria in hope to learn to change their ways and become something different alongside their ancestral foes, whole Phastos has dedicated himself to eliminating Thanos.

Thanos has no such intention of going peacefully and instead searches for a way to become his full self again. Seeking a complete body once more, Thanos and his new ally, Druig, decide that it's crucial for Thanos to go through the Great Machine and be formally reborn. While there are many roadblocks to this resolution, Druig suggests that Thaos could force his resurrection by becoming the Prime Eternal, the effective leader of the Eternals through an upcoming election within the Uni-Mind. Thanks to Druig's manipulations, he's been able to effectively maneuver Thanos into a position to actually win that election. Arriving in time to join the Uni-Mind, Thanos quickly wrestles Zuras out of the bond, murders him and is promptly named Eternal Prime.

While there is likely to be resistance from the heroic Eternals and other factions, Thanos has become the commander of all of Marvel's Eternals, even those who don't participate in wider Eternals society. Exceedingly powerful in his own right, he even uses the opportunity to prevent Druig from taking advantage of his currently vulnerable form by swiftly slaying the Eternal and reveling in his newfound position of power. With the Uni-Mind at his command, Thanos has gained access to the shared power of the various Eternals. He can command them in his new crusades, and use his newfound resources to reconstruct a true body with the Great Machine, perhaps even ensuring he becomes even more powerful than before as a true Eternal.

With this action, Thanos has quietly positioned himself as the ultimate final threat to the Marvel Universe once again. The Mad Titan has always been one of Marvel's most fearsome foes, but -- given Thor's visions of a truly empowered Thanos killing the Thunder God -- it appears increasingly likely that Thanos' day of reckoning is upon the Marvel Universe. Given his experience and history, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for Thanos to turn the power of the Uni-Mind against the universe as a whole. By gaining the title of Eternal Prime and earning the power to call together the Uni-Mind, Thanos has established himself as perhaps Marvel's most prominent threat -- and he's becoming more powerful than perhaps he's ever been.
