Thanks to its extensive use of time travel, Avengers: Endgame actually features two different incarnations of Thanos: One from the prime timeline, killed by Thor early in the film; and a version from 2014, who travels into his relative future to defeat the Avengers and obtain the Infinity Gauntlet to ensure his victory.

Endgame co-director Anthony Russo and co-writer Stephen Markus have revealed what the production referred to the younger Thanos as during the making of the film and how he differed from the version seen throughout Avengers: Infinity War.

"We refer to him as Warrior Thanos, the version of the character before he put down his armor and became enlightened and wanted to search for the stones," explained Anthony Russo in an interview with Empire. "He's angrier; it might be his flaw in the film, that he's a little bit more precocious and self-confident, not quite as enlightened."

While the older Thanos is ultimately successful in Infinity War, using the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet to wipe out half of all life in the universe, the filmmakers felt he wasn't quite as violent or emotional as the version traveling to the future from shortly before the events of the original Guardians of the Galaxy.

"He is, oddly for all the damage he does in Infinity War, a mellowed-out, philosophical Thanos," observed Markus. "And we wanted the warlord in this movie, who hasn't quite worked out all the nuances yet."

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Danai Gurira as Okoye and Bradley Cooper as Rocket, with Gwyneth Paltrow Pepper Potts, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Benedict Wong as Wong, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Josh Brolin as Thanos.
