‘Tetris The Movie’ Finds Funding, Lines Up 2017 Production Start

Originally announced in September 2014, Deadline has learned that “Tetris The Movie” has found its funding and will begin production in 2017. The film, billed as an ensemble sci-fi thriller with a Chinese cast, will film in China and other locations in 2017. The film is the first an an expected trilogy of “Tetris” films.

“Tetris The Movie” will be an $80 million co-production between the U.S. and China. The film will be developed and financed by a new production company formed by Bruno Wu and Larry Kasanoff called Threshold Global Studios. The development, which secures the film’s financing, comes after a year spent working with the Tetris Company on the project.

As the producer on the “Mortal Kombat” films and TV series, Kasanoff has a history with bringing video games to life. Kasanoff spoke briefly to Deadline about the project, saying “Tetris The Movie” is “not at all what you think; it will be a cool surprise.”

Created by Soviet game designer Alexey Pajitnov, Tetris was released in 1984, and soon became a worldwide hit.
