Based on the sci-fi novel of the same name by Nnedi Okorafor, Who Fears Death has been in the works at HBO for a few years now, with Aïda Mashaka Croal (Marvel's Jessica Jones, Marvel's Luke Cage) currently attached to serve as showrunner, writer and executive producer. Thompson joins Croal and A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) author George R. R. Martin, who previously signed on as an executive producer for Who Fears Death as well. Thompson will also executive produce HBO Max's on-screen adaptation of The Secret Lives of Church Ladies, a short story collection by Deesha Philyaw that was one of the finalists for the 2020 National Book Award for Fiction.

"I'm beyond thrilled to officially launch my production company, Viva Maude, which has been a real passion project and labor of love over the last few years," Thompson said in a statement. "I'm elated to begin this partnership and to bring entertaining and impactful television projects to my friends and collaborators at HBO and HBO Max. Together we are committed to developing interesting and inclusive stories with inventive creators and to discover new voices and visionaries."

Thompson is certainly no stranger to HBO, as she is one of the stars of the cable network's hit sci-fi series Westworld. She also starred in and executive produced the 2020 Amazon film Sylvie's Love. On top of that, she is known for her roles such in films as Selma, Creed, Men in Black: International and Lady and the Tramp, as well as for her role on the TV series Veronica Mars during its original run. Thompson joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Valkyrie in 2017's Thor: Ragnarok, a role she subsequently reprised in 2019's Avengers: Endgame. She is set to return as Valkyrie in Marvel Studios' Thor: Love and Thunder, which is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 6, 2022.
