An official synopsis for Terminator: Dark Fate provides more information on the franchise's continuity going forward. The news comes ahead of new footage for the film, which will screen at CinemaCon later today.

According to the synopsis,

Linda Hamilton (Sarah Connor) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (T-800) return in their iconic roles in Terminator: Dark Fate, directed by Tim Miller (Deadpool) and produced by visionary filmmaker James Cameron and David Ellison. Following the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Terminator: Dark Fate also stars Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes, Gabriel Luna, and Diego Boneta.

Despite being the sixth installment of the 35-year-old franchise, the synopsis makes clear that the film will in fact be a direct sequel to 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day. 2003's Terminator: Rise of the Machines, 2009's Terminator: Salvation and 2015's Terminator: Genisys will all be ignored by the new film. This should come as little surprise to fans, given that James Cameron was largely uninvolved in the releases that came after the 1991 sequel. Nevertheless, Cameron has made very clear that he is fulfilling a supporting role for director Tim Miller.

Cameron is, of course, not the only returning player to the universe. As detailed in the synopsis, both Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger will reprise their career-defining roles in The Terminator. Released in 1984, The Terminator received critical acclaim and spawned five cinematic sequels and a TV series alongside numerous comic book and video game adaptations.
