Telltale Games announced the return of The Wolf Among Us upon the studio's 2019 revival, but there had been few updates about the project in the years following. Based on Bill Willingham's Fables comic series, the first game was released over the course of five episodes in 2013 and 2014. It served as a prequel to Fables in which players controlled Bigby Wolf (a.k.a. the Big Bad Wolf), the sheriff of a hidden New York community occupied by fairytale characters called Fabletown. The story followed Bigby as he investigated mysterious murders in Fabletown, a community that had previously been fairly safe for a long time.

The original Wolf Among Us was praised for its noir tone, visual style and story. Now, after years without news on The Wolf Among Us 2, new details about the game have been released, with more updates on the way. Here's everything we know so far about The Wolf Among Us 2.

The Wolf Among Us 2's Trailer

The first in-engine trailer for The Wolf Among Us 2 has been released and it sheds a little light on what players can expect from the game. The trailer flits between the dark and the comedic easily, showing that the much-anticipated sequel will maintain the original game’s celebrated style.

What Is The Wolf Among Us 2 About?

There are not a lot of details about the plot of The Wolf Among Us 2. It remains a prequel to Fables, this time set in winter 1980 (six months after the events of season one). The trailer shows Bigby being interviewed about ‘the night of the incident’ by people who are likely from the normal world. We see violence break out on that night with what seems to be characters from The Wizard of Oz, which leads to Bigby transforming into his wolf form. On the plot, Darren Gladstone of Telltale has said: “As Bigby, you take on a case that spans the normal – mundie – world, torn between who you’re going to help.” So far, the trailers have suggested that Bigby will need to delve into his monstrous side -- the side of him he has tried to overcome and leave in the past -- which points to an even darker story for this game.

While there were plans for a Wolf Among Us sequel prior to Telltale's closure in 2018, there were no plans to resolve the first game's cliffhanger ending, which was inspired by the noir films it took inspiration from. However, that version of the sequel was canceled when the studio closed. After Telltale's revival by LCG Entertainment and the subsequent announcement of The Wolf Among Us 2, it was revealed that the new sequel would be made from scratch rather than using the original plans. Now, it's unclear if the game will address its predecessor's ending or leave it open-ended as originally intended.

When Will The Wolf Among Us 2 Release?

The latest trailer confirms a 2023 release for The Wolf Among Us 2, but there is not yet a specific date. As of the end of 2021, we know that the game is in full production, its script has been finalized and its motion capture is currently being worked on.

Outside of that, it has been confirmed that, like the first game and other Telltale titles, The Wolf Among Us 2 will be released episodically. Each episode of The Wolf Among Us was developed separately, leading to a long wait between the first and second episodes' releases. However, The Wolf Among Us 2's episodes are being developed simultaneously, so it is likely the wait between them will be shorter and more consistent this time.
