A new DLC character will be added to Tekken 7 this fall, kicking off season 4 for the popular fighting game, which has sold 6 million copies since its 2017 debut. Unlike previous DLCs, Namco isn't bringing in guest characters from other games (or other media entirely). Instead, it's reaching back to the game's distant past for a character that hasn't appeared in a mainline Tekken game in a quarter-century.

Kunimitsu joins the roster of a numbered Tekken for the first time since 1995's Tekken 2. After appearing in the first two games, her only high profile appearances were in the non-canonical Tekken Tag Tournament games. She was also an unlockable character in the free-to-play Tekken Revolution, which tried to recreate the arcade experience on consoles.

It's not the same Kunimitsu fans remember, though, as the Tekken 7 iteration will make Kunimitsu a legacy character. She's the daughter of the original Kunimitsu and looks to be continuing her mother's rivalry with Yoshimitsu, the "space ninja" who has appeared in every mainline Tekken game.

The rivalry between the two started when Yoshimitsu kicked Kunimitsu, a master thief, out of the Manji Clan for stealing from them. After resorting to repairing air conditioners to make ends meet, she entered the inaugural King of Iron Fist Tournament to steal a valuable necklace from fighter Michelle Chang. She failed, losing her fight to Chang.

After her embarrassment in the tournament, Kunimitsu moved in with her grandfather. She learned from him that Yoshimitsu's sword was a priceless artifact, passed down from generation to generation by the Manji Clan. He had spent his entire life trying to make a replica and failed to do so. Kunimitsu entered the second King of Iron First tournament to steal the sword on his behalf. Once again, she came up short.

After back to back failures, Kunimitsu retired from the tournament. She would give birth to a child who would go on to become the second Kunimitsu. Though there's no indication of what became of the original Kunimitsu or led her daughter to take up her mantle, the game's story mode could always clarify this.

In the reveal trailer, the new Kunimitsu does reference her mother. After defeating Yoshimitsu, she says, "My mother told me about you." While the trailer isn't meant to be part of a story mode, it does confirm that the original Kunimitsu told her daughter about her previous Tekken exploits, if not outright trained her to take over the role. More surprising was this Kunimitsu discarding her mask, something her mother never did.

Gameplay-wise, players should expect Kunimitsu to play similar to her rival. The character has been very similar to Yoshimitsu in past games, only lacking his unblockable sword attacks. The new Kunimitsu does dual wield weapons, an improvement on her mother's style.

From the trailer, it's clear that her speed will continue to be a big part of her fighting style. The original Kunimitsu was considered the fastest character in the entire series, with her attacks having the highest frames per second of any character. Her agility will come in handy when dodging the attacks of stronger characters.

Beyond fans of the character from her sparse previous appearances, Kuminitsu seems like an ideal character for fans of other kunoichis, like Soul Calibur's Taki or Dead or Alive's Kasumi. Players who will happily trade range and power for blazing speed may have a new main when she debuts in the fall.
