"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" earned an estimated $12.5 million Friday in the North American box office, pushing the Paramount Pictures sequel toward a projected $33.7 million opening weekend.

While that would certainly buy a lot of pizza, it's far behind the $65.6 million opening of the previous Turtles film in August 2014. Still, it appears to be enough for Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael to win the weekend.

Fox's "X-Men: Apocalypse" appears headed for second place with a little more than $22 million, following an estimated $6.6 million Friday haul. Despite its disappointing $80 million opening last weekend, 27 percent lower than 2014's "X-Men: Days of Future Past," its domestic tally will reach north of $116 million by Sunday.

"Me Before You," the romance headlined by "Game of Thrones" star Emilia Clarke, trailed at third Friday with $7.7 million, on its way to an anticipated $18 million weekend.

"Alice Through the Looking Glass," meanwhile, continues to be a major disappointment for Disney, clawing out a little more than $3 million on Friday. It should end the weekend with somewhere around $11 million -- that's after a $26.8 million opening.
