IDW Publishing is reviving the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon as a four-part comic book limited series.

Per Newsarama, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures comes from the creative team of Erik Burnham and Tim Lattie. Set to launch this September, the series tells "awesomely absurd" stories, such as "one of General Krang's stalwart stone soldiers abandoning their post in pursuit of hair-metal superstardom," illustrated in the style of the 1980s TMNT animated series. Burnham previously penned IDW's G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero - Saturday Morning Adventures, another four-issue series similarly based on the original G.I. Joe cartoon from the '80s.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures #1 features main cover art by Lattie, who also provides a variant cover. The issue will also ship with variant covers by TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman and Tony Gregori.

"I'm no stranger to writing the TMNT for IDW, but this is different," Burnham said. "The version of the Turtles that exploded onto TV screens in 1987 was the version that I first met, and it brought me a lot of joy... and getting to play in this particular corner of the sandbox has built upon that joy! Humor, action, and plenty of high concepts were packed into each episode, and we're following that path. I'm not sure if anyone in comics is having as much fun as Tim Lattie and I are with these done-in-one stories!"

"Growing up in the late '80s, nothing was like the experience of discovering TMNT: playing with the toys, watching the show, or waiting in a crowd with the hopes of getting a chance to try your luck at the arcade game," Lattie added. "It's rare enough in life to be able to do what you love for work, but to work on something you grew up loving is hard to comprehend. What else is there to say... Go ninja, go ninja, go!"

Based on the comic book characters created by Eastman and Peter Laird, the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series premiered on television in 1987. The show ran for a total of 193 episodes across 10 seasons, concluding in 1996. The Heroes in a Half Shell have since been rebooted on the small screen on numerous occasions.
