One of the biggest runaway hits for DC in 2019 was the original graphic novel Teen Titans: Raven, with Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo reimagining the fan-favorite superhero for a new generation.
In a CBR exclusive sneak peek at today's installment of DC Daily, writer Kami Garcia revealed why she wanted to collaborate with Picolo on the graphic novel, even after being presented with a selection of artists by DC. Garcia had noticed Picolo's work on Pinterest, where he rendered the Teen Titans as everyday teenagers in civilian clothes rather than their costumes. DC approached Picolo with the opportunity, only to find the artist initially unresponsive.
"It was problematic, Gabriel didn't respond to several emails. He thought it was a prank," Garcia said, with Picolo thinking the offer was too good to be true.
Garcia noted that the two had strong collaborative chemistry and that she considered him her co-author, with Picolo eager to draw Beast Boy for the company in their fresh take on the characters.
